Maruti Suzuki has marked a major milestone in India’s electric mobility landscape as its newly launched e-Vitara has become the first electric vehicle (EV) in the country to secure a 5-star safety rating under the stringent Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP). The certification was formally awarded in New Delhi in the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, reinforcing the government’s push for safer, cleaner, and future-ready mobility.
India’s First 5-Star Rated EV Under Bharat NCAP
The e-Vitara achieved the highest safety rating in both Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP), making it a benchmark-setting product in India’s fast-growing EV market. According to the test results, the electric SUV scored 31.49 out of 32 points in AOP and 43 out of 49 points in COP, outperforming several ICE and EV rivals in structural integrity and passenger protection.
Advanced EV Platform and High-Strength Body Structure
Built on Maruti Suzuki’s modern HEARTECT-e dedicated EV platform, the e-Vitara features a reinforced body with over 60% high-tensile and ultra-high-tensile steel, optimizing crash energy absorption and cabin rigidity. The SUV also incorporates a robust battery protection architecture designed to withstand impact forces, ensuring safety for both the powertrain and passengers.
7 Airbags and Comprehensive Safety Suite Across All Variants
Safety is a highlight, with seven airbags—including a driver knee airbag—offered as standard on every variant. The e-Vitara also comes equipped with:
-
Level-2 ADAS features
-
Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
-
ABS with EBD and Brake Assist
-
Hill-Hold Control
-
Multi-Collision Braking
These features ensure enhanced protection in emergency scenarios and contribute significantly to the vehicle’s top-tier crash rating.
Raising the Bar for EV Safety Standards in India
The 5-star Bharat NCAP rating not only boosts consumer confidence in electric vehicles but also signals a shift toward more safety-conscious EV development in India. With rising adoption of electric mobility, the e-Vitara’s performance sets a new national safety standard for automakers entering the EV space.
Strengthening Maruti Suzuki’s EV Roadmap
The recognition also aligns with Maruti Suzuki’s broader EV expansion strategy. During the e-Vitara launch, the company announced a roadmap for 1 lakh EV charging points across India, demonstrating its commitment to building a robust and accessible electric ecosystem.
A Landmark Moment for India’s EV Industry
With the e-Vitara emerging as the country’s first electric SUV to achieve a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, Maruti Suzuki has reinforced its position as a leader in safe, reliable, and future-ready mobility. The achievement is expected to accelerate EV adoption nationwide, setting a powerful precedent for upcoming electric models.
