Mangaluru marks a milestone in its public transport history with the inauguration of the city’s first private electric bus today. The eco-friendly vehicle, operated by Ganesh Prasad Travels, is expected to start running on the roads shortly after completing registration formalities.
The bus will serve Route Number 27, covering the Mangaladevi–State Bank–Mangaladevi circuit. It is a 9-metre, 32-seater electric bus purchased from Pune-based Newton Auto, and it is the company’s first e-bus deployed for commercial service.
The vehicle has a range of approximately 200 km on a full charge and supports fast charging in two hours or slow charging in about five hours. Initially, it will utilize public charging points at select petrol stations across the city.
Ganesh Prasad Travels currently operates five buses, each completing 19 trips per day. The new electric bus replaces one older diesel-powered vehicle, reducing carbon emissions. The company plans to gradually transition its entire fleet to electric vehicles and has co-founded Charge Mobility Private Limited to promote a fully green public transport network in Mangaluru.
