India’s mobility ecosystem is rapidly evolving, but along with this growth comes a complex web of legal challenges — from unresolved challans and roadside detentions to accident-related FIRs and insurance delays. Legal friction on the road not only disrupts daily commutes but significantly hampers commercial operations, leading to costly downtime and operational inefficiencies. Recognizing this long-overlooked gap, Lawyered — a legal-tech startup — has pioneered a breakthrough solution through LOTS (Lawyer-On-The-Spot), a tech-driven platform offering real-time, 24×7 roadside legal assistance to vehicle owners and fleet operators.

LOTS is reshaping how India deals with legal issues on the road by combining the strength of a 70,000+ verified lawyer network with smart technologies like GPS, API integrations, and workflow automation. With over 4.5 lakh vehicles onboarded and Rs.53 crore in penalties saved, the impact has been far-reaching.

In this exclusive interaction, Rashmi interviews Himanshu Gupta, Founder & CEO at Lawyered, to understand the journey behind LOTS, how it’s transforming legal support for the transportation sector, and why real-time legal tech is now a crucial pillar for India’s future in smart  sustainable mobility. Himanshu shares insights into how Lawyered is bridging the gap between law and logistics — one roadside incident at a time.

      1. What legal issues do most Indian vehicle owners face on the road today — especially in case of accidents or challans?and

Most Indian vehicle owners — both private and commercial — face two primary legal challenges on the road: traffic challans and accidents. These are not just compliance issues — they’re roadside legal problems that disrupt lives, delay business, and create panic during moments that need calm and clarity.

In the case of challans, vehicle owners often struggle with:

      • Challan discovery: There’s no single window where all pending challans across states can be viewed. For fleet operators, this means multiple vehicles collecting multiple challans across jurisdictions — all without real-time visibility.
      • Resolution complexity: Even when challans are discovered, resolving them is another battle. Some challans can be paid digitally, but many — especially those marked for court — demand physical appearances, consuming precious time and resources.

When it comes to accidents, the legal situation is even more delicate:

      • FIRs, vehicle impoundment, delayed insurance claims, or worse — possible criminal charges — can instantly turn a roadside incident into a legal nightmare.
      • There’s no immediate access to verified legal help, leading to misinformation, panic, and vulnerability to coercion.

Across both scenarios, the common thread is the absence of 24×7 on-call roadside legal assistance — a gap that has long gone unnoticed and unaddressed in India’s mobility ecosystem.

      2. Why do you think there has been a gap in real-time legal support for mobility until now?

The gap in real-time legal support for mobility in India exists due to a combination of infrastructure, awareness, and systemic limitations.

Historically, legal services in India have been reactive, fragmented, and offline. The legal profession hasn’t traditionally scaled to serve mobile, on-the-spot needs — especially in a fast-moving environment like transportation. For vehicle owners, especially during roadside incidents like challans or accidents, there has never been a structured mechanism to access verified legal help instantly.

Secondly, legal-tech adoption in mobility has significantly lagged behind other verticals like finance or health. While GPS tracking, digital tolls, and fleet analytics became mainstream, legal compliance remained manual and paper-driven — often addressed only when penalties or legal complications arose.

For commercial fleet operators, the lack of real-time legal support stems from the absence of centralized data and the complexity of jurisdictional laws across different states. There’s been no incentive or platform that brings legal expertise, state-specific rules, and instant response together in one seamless system.

In essence, the legal side of mobility was treated as a back-office burden, rather than a frontline need — and that’s exactly the gap Lawyered set out to solve.

      3. What inspired Lawyered to create a tech-driven solution like LOTS?

Lawyered initially started as a legal marketplace — our focus was on bridging the demand-supply gap between individuals and verified lawyers. But the turning point came during the COVID-19 lockdown. We started receiving distress calls from stranded truck drivers who had no clarity on local movement rules, border restrictions, or what to do when stopped by the police. They were legally vulnerable, isolated, and desperate for real-time help.

That moment made us realize two things: first, that mobility and transportation form the legal blindspot of India’s economy, and second, that the legal needs of this sector weren’t just under-served — they were completely ignored.

The mobility industry thrives on constant movement, yet the legal system expects stationary compliance — court appearances, offline challan payments, manual paperwork. The mismatch was glaring. So, we pivoted from being a legal aggregator to becoming a product-first company, and built LOTS (Lawyer-on-the-Spot) to offer proactive, tech-enabled, 24×7 roadside legal assistance — providing instant help exactly when and where vehicle owners need it most.

      4. Can you walk us through how the LOTS system works when a road incident happens?

LOTS is designed to deliver real-time, multi-layered legal support to vehicle owners and drivers the moment an incident occurs. The system works through a structured 3-stage approach:

      • 24×7 On-Call Resolution: As soon as an incident occurs — whether it’s a challan, accident, vehicle detention, or police issue — the driver or owner can call our dedicated LOTS helpline. Our in-house legal team provides instant, on-call assistance, guiding the person step-by-step through what needs to be done. 85% of legal incidents are fully resolved at this stage itself, without the need for further escalation.
      • On-Spot Legal Representation: For more complex situations like accidents, FIRs, or vehicle seizure, where physical presence is required, we dispatch a local lawyer from our network of 70,000+ verified legal professionals. A lawyer reaches the spot within 2 business hours to handle the matter on ground — whether it’s speaking with the police, filing documents, or representing the client’s interests in real time.
      • Challan-as-a-Service & RTO-as-a-Service: LOTS also offers a centralized legal compliance platform for vehicle owners and operators. Through this platform, users can:

      ● Discover all challans — across states and enforcement agencies — in one place
      ● Resolve challans instantly, including those requiring court representation
      ● Access RTO-related legal services, such as permits, NOCs, ownership disputes, and documentation support

So far, we’ve resolved 1.25 lakh+ challans, making LOTS one of India’s largest tech-driven legal compliance platforms for mobility.

      5. How has the response been so far — any numbers or examples of impact you’d like to share?

The traction for LOTS has been both wide and deep — across consumers, fleet operators, and the broader mobility ecosystem. Our numbers tell the story:

      • 4.5 lakh+ vehicles onboarded on the LOTS platform.
      • 1.75 lakh+ roadside legal incidents resolved, with 85% resolved online via on-call support.
      • 1.25 lakh+ challans successfully discovered and resolved.
      • 800+ fleet owners actively use LOTS for legal compliance.
      • Over ₹53 crore saved in penalties, downtime, and legal delays.
      • 3,700+ days saved for customers by avoiding court visits and manual follow-ups.
      • 98% pincodes covered, with lawyer availability within 50 km radius.
      • 70,000+ verified lawyers onboarded, ensuring real-time local support.
      • 99% incident resolution success rate, across categories like challans, accidents, FIRs, and RTO issues.

LOTS is trusted by major mobility and logistics brands like Cars24, CarDekho, OLX Autos, RenewBuy, Gati, ALD Automotive, Park+, Everest Fleet, and CJ Darcl, and has also formed exclusive partnerships with FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations) and AITWA (All India Transporters Welfare Association).

Together, this makes LOTS the go-to legal compliance and roadside assistance platform for both individual vehicle owners and commercial transport operators across India.

      6. What technologies power LOTS and make instant legal help on the road possible?

LOTS achieves seamless, instant legal assistance through a combination of technology integration and a robust lawyer network, enabling rapid response and efficient case management. The key components include:

      • Multiple Access Points: Users can report incidents easily via the mobile app, helpline number, or online dashboard, ensuring help is just a tap or call away.
      • Lawyer Partner App & Geolocation: Our network of 70,000+ verified lawyers use a dedicated partner app that leverages GPS and mapping technologies to dispatch the nearest lawyer within 2 business hours for on-spot legal assistance.
      • Data Integration & APIs: LOTS integrates with various government and third-party databases — including RTOs, traffic authorities, and insurance providers — via APIs to instantly fetch vehicle and incident-related information.
      • CRM & Workflow Automation: Our backend systems track each legal incident through its entire lifecycle, automate follow-ups, and efficiently manage court or RTO representation, ensuring timely resolution.

This tech-enabled ecosystem and real-time data access, transforms traditional roadside legal support into a proactive, scalable, and user-friendly service for vehicle owners and commercial operators alike.

      7. How is Lawyered working with RTOs or local authorities to build better legal compliance in transportation?

Lawyered is actively collaborating with RTOs, traffic enforcement agencies, and transport associations to streamline legal processes and promote a culture of compliance in the mobility ecosystem. Our efforts include:

      • Digital Integration: We are working to integrate with RTO databases across states through secure APIs, allowing seamless access to challan data, permit status, ownership details, and legal history — which helps both vehicle owners and enforcement agencies stay informed and compliant.
      • Institutional Partnerships: Through our exclusive tie-ups with FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations) and AITWA (All India Transporters Welfare Association), we are bringing structured legal support to dealerships, fleet owners, and logistics players — making compliance a priority from the point of vehicle sale to daily operations.
      • Legal Awareness Campaigns: We regularly conduct digital and on-ground awareness drives, webinars, and knowledge sessions — especially for commercial drivers and transporters — to educate them about their rights, legal procedures, and how to avoid legal pitfalls on the road.
      • Challan-as-a-Service for Fleets: Our platform helps fleet owners discover and resolve challans across multiple jurisdictions — replacing manual processes with a centralized compliance dashboard and proactive alerts.

Through these initiatives, Lawyered is bridging the long-standing gap between vehicle operators and regulatory authorities — making legal compliance easier, faster, and more transparent.

      8. How do partnerships with commercial fleets help in solving large-scale legal issues in logistics and transport?

The transportation and mobility industry is the lifeline of India’s economy, moving essential goods, raw materials, and people across states — quite literally keeping the country running. But legal inefficiencies often bring this movement to a halt. A single unresolved challan, an accident FIR, or permit-related confusion can result in vehicle detention, delivery delays, and serious business losses.

This is where LOTS creates measurable impact.

By partnering with commercial fleets, we’re eliminating the hidden legal friction that traditionally slowed down operations. We’ve helped fleet owners:

      • Prevent vehicle detentions and roadside delays, ensuring goods reach their destination on time
      • Avoid court appearances and complex legal follow-ups, saving both driver hours and managerial bandwidth
      • Resolve challans and RTO issues proactively, reducing penalties and improving fleet uptime
      • Create legal transparency at scale, replacing chaos with control

In doing so, LOTS has helped bring predictability, compliance, and efficiency to an industry that runs on tight margins and tighter timelines. We’re not just solving legal problems — we’re helping India’s transport engine run smoother and smarter.

      9. Apart from LOTS, is Lawyered exploring any other legal tech innovations for the mobility space?

      We’re going deeper, not wider.

The mobility sector faces two major causes of stoppage: technical breakdowns, largely addressed by roadside assistance services, and legal challenges — a problem so significant that the industry bleeds an estimated USD 8 billion annually due to legal delays and compliance issues.

LOTS was initially designed as a legal solution specifically for commercial transportation. However, recognizing the pervasive nature of legal hurdles, we have expanded LOTS to cover all vehicle types and stakeholders within the mobility ecosystem — including private vehicles, cabs, electric vehicles (EVs), and fleet operators.

Rather than developing multiple separate products, Lawyered is focused on scaling LOTS as a unified, tech-enabled legal assistance platform that addresses the legal challenges faced by every participant in the industry. This holistic approach allows us to deliver consistent, real-time legal support across a diverse and growing set of users, helping to reduce inefficiencies and improve compliance throughout India’s roads.

      10. What is your vision for Lawyered’s role in India’s future mobility and road safety ecosystem?

Our vision at Lawyered is to be the trusted legal partner for every vehicle owner and operator in India, creating a proactive, tech-enabled, safer, more efficient, and legally compliant mobility ecosystem. We see LOTS evolving into an integrated legal platform that not only resolves roadside incidents but also prevents legal complications through real-time alerts, predictive analytics, and AI-driven guidance.

By embedding legal assistance directly into the daily operations of private users, commercial fleets, EV operators, and new mobility models like ride-sharing, Lawyered aims to reduce legal friction, vehicle downtime, and financial losses, enabling smoother journeys for millions across the country.

Ultimately, we want to contribute to making India’s roads safer and more accessible, supporting the government’s vision for smart, sustainable mobility — where legal support is instant, affordable, and universally available.
