In a major push towards sustainable mobility, the Government of India has approved 33 electric buses for Ladakh under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme, strengthening public transport in the Union Territory.
The fleet will consist of 7-metre electric buses designed specifically to handle Ladakh’s rugged terrain and challenging road conditions. Officials stated that delivery of the buses is expected within a month.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena expressed gratitude to the Centre for approving the long-pending demand. He highlighted that the initiative marks a significant step towards building an eco-friendly and efficient transport system in the region.
He noted that the introduction of electric buses will help reduce carbon emissions, provide affordable transport, and improve connectivity, especially for residents in remote areas. The move also reflects the administration’s commitment to protecting Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem while enhancing public convenience.
The initiative aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to develop Ladakh as a carbon-neutral region through sustainable practices. By promoting clean energy in public transport, the project is expected to play a crucial role in environmental conservation across the ecologically sensitive Trans-Himalayan region.
The compact design of the buses ensures better maneuverability on narrow and hilly roads, making them suitable for local conditions. Additionally, the project is expected to offer a reliable and cost-effective travel option for residents.
Since taking office, the Lieutenant Governor has been focusing on eco-friendly initiatives, including promoting electric mobility and solar energy, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and preserve Ladakh’s natural environment.
