Kia is set to strengthen its European electric vehicle footprint with the commencement of EV4 production at its Žilina plant in Slovakia by the end of August. Customer deliveries for the compact electric hatchback are expected to begin in September 2025, marking the first time the model will be produced outside South Korea.
Localized Production Strategy
The EV4 hatchback is built on the front-wheel-drive version of Kia’s E-GMP platform and will be assembled alongside the company’s existing internal combustion models like the Ceed and Sportage at the Slovakian facility.
While the hatchback enters production in Europe, the fastback (sedan) version — around 30 cm longer — will continue to be manufactured in South Korea. This two-pronged strategy allows Kia to cater to different global markets while leveraging local manufacturing advantages.
Competitive Pricing and Market Advantage
The EV4 hatchback will start at around €37,590, nearly €10,000 cheaper than the fastback variant. By producing in Europe, Kia will also be able to take advantage of regional subsidy schemes, which increasingly consider the origin of both the vehicle and its battery. This localisation is expected to make the EV4 more attractive to European buyers facing rising competition in the affordable EV segment.
Ambitious Sales Goals
Kia has set a global annual sales target of 160,000 units for the EV4, with half of these earmarked for Europe. The automaker hopes the EV4 will replicate the momentum of the EV3, which sold 37,000 units in the first half of 2025 alone, boosting Kia’s EV sales in Europe by 60% year on year.
Competing in a Crowded Segment
Positioned directly against rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric, the EV4 is a crucial model for Kia as it works to stabilise its European market share, which recently slipped from 4.1% to 4%.
A Strategic Milestone for Kia in Europe
The start of EV4 production in Slovakia underscores Kia’s commitment to strengthening its EV lineup and competing aggressively in Europe’s compact EV market. By combining competitive pricing, local production benefits, and strong sales ambitions, Kia is aiming to reinforce its position as a leading electric mobility brand in the region.
