A novel Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that recycles batteries from MG ZS electric vehicles has been developed by JSW MG Motor India in collaboration with LICO Materials. The project, which offers storage capacities ranging from 18kWh to 300kWh, is the company’s fourth initiative under its Project Revive program.
The system, which was created in partnership with LICO Materials, an Epsilon Group subsidiary, has improved safety features like intelligent temperature management and immersion oil cooling. According to the business, the system can save up to 60% on operating costs and has a four-fold longer lifespan than traditional alternatives.
Three storage system variations have been developed by LICO Materials for use in commercial, industrial, and residential settings. The systems have a five-year warranty and function in temperatures ranging from -20°C to 60°C.
This comes after JSW MG Motor India’s earlier recycling efforts, which included partnerships with Vision Mechatronics for an industrial UPS system, projects with Lohum and TERI to power a school in Nainital with a 5kWh BESS unit in August 2024, and partnerships with BATX and IIT Delhi for an off-grid charging station in February 2024.
The project coincides with the increased demand for sustainable solutions for end-of-life EV batteries due to the expansion of the electric vehicle market in India. As producers look to address environmental issues, cut waste, and support the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure, battery recycling and repurposing have emerged as critical components of the EV ecosystem.
