Ioncor, the battery technology division spun off from Valmet Automotive in 2024, has announced the launch of its cutting-edge Energy Pack Long cell-to-pack battery system designed for electric buses. This innovation, developed in Finland, promises higher energy density, improved scalability, and faster charging—marking a major leap in next-generation EV battery design.
The Energy Pack Long eliminates the need for traditional battery modules, offering a direct cell-to-pack architecture that enhances space efficiency and performance. Each pack delivers 79 kWh capacity, with scalability up to 1,000 kWh, enabling flexibility for a wide range of electric bus configurations. Operating at 666 volts, the system is engineered for commercial fleets seeking reliable, long-range, and high-power battery solutions.
According to Ioncor CEO Roberts Abele, the Energy Pack Long achieves “industry-leading energy density”—measuring 290 Wh/l and 160 Wh/kg—making it adaptable across multiple bus platforms. The compact pack dimensions (194.6 x 55.8 x 24.9 cm) and operational temperature range of –30°C to +60°C ensure resilience across diverse climates and terrains.
The battery supports ultra-fast charging with a 3C charge rate, allowing 10–80% capacity recharge in just 25 minutes. Designed for over 7,000 life cycles, the system also offers customisable chemistries to meet specific customer needs, reinforcing Ioncor’s commitment to flexible, long-term energy solutions.
Ioncor’s latest innovation comes amid Finland’s growing focus on strategic battery independence. The Finnish government, through the Finnish Minerals Group (FMG), recently acquired a 70% stake in Ioncor, alongside a €20 million capital investment to boost local battery R&D and production capabilities. This move is part of Finland’s plan to build a “responsible and competitive battery value chain”, particularly crucial given its 1,300-kilometre border with Russia.
Valmet Automotive, Ioncor’s parent company, now operates with 79% state ownership as part of Finland’s industrial strategy. Ioncor’s expertise will be central to national energy security, supporting the country’s downstream battery ecosystem through innovation, design, and production.
Beyond electric buses, Ioncor also manufactures advanced battery systems for trucks, commercial vehicles, and the automotive industry. With over 1,000 employees across Finland and Germany, the company is rapidly expanding its presence as a European leader in sustainable battery technology.
In summary, the Energy Pack Long represents a milestone in European EV innovation—combining modular scalability, robust performance, and eco-friendly engineering to power the next generation of electric public transport.
