South Korea’s largest battery industry exhibition, InterBattery 2026, opened at the COEX Convention & Exhibition Center in Seoul. The three-day event attracted around 667 companies and more than 52,000 pre-registered visitors, despite challenges facing the electric vehicle (EV) sector, including the current slowdown in EV demand.
Major battery manufacturers unveiled new technologies aimed at overcoming the so-called EV “chasm.” LG Energy Solution introduced its JF2 DC LINK 5.0 energy storage system (ESS) based on lithium iron phosphate batteries, with mass production planned for 2027. The company also showcased a prototype of its next-generation all-solid-state battery, which is expected to significantly improve battery safety and performance.
Meanwhile, Samsung SDI displayed its integrated ESS platform called Samsung Battery Box (SBB) and presented a pouch-type all-solid-state battery designed for AI robots. SK On showcased a high-energy-density ESS battery along with a new immersion cooling technology developed with SK Enmove to reduce fire risks.
Beyond EVs, companies also highlighted batteries for robots, drones, and urban air mobility (UAM). Demonstrations included robotics solutions from LG Electronics and industrial robots linked to Hyundai Wia.
Officials said expanding the energy storage system market and developing new applications for batteries will be crucial for maintaining competitiveness in the global battery industry over the next several years.
