Access to timely legal help in India has long been complicated, time-consuming, and intimidating—especially for drivers and transporters facing issues on the road. Instant Legal, also known as LOTS, has changed this reality by creating an entirely new category: roadside legal assistance. Built as a mobile-first, tech-driven platform, LOTS ensures that legal support is available exactly when and where it is needed, preventing problems from escalating into long legal battles.
Starting with roadside assistance, LOTS now operates a nationwide 24/7 helpline supported by a strong network of nearly 75,000 lawyers across India. Whether it is resolving disputes on the spot, filing FIRs, applying for bail, or handling challans through its digital solution ChalanPay.in, the platform focuses on instant resolution rather than prolonged court processes. Today, LOTS supports over 6.5 lakh vehicles, resolves up to 20,000 challans every month, and is rapidly expanding into other legal areas such as inheritance law and wills.
The vision is clear—to make legal help simple, fast, and fear-free, and to position LOTS as a household name for legal solutions across India.
In a recent interaction at a Lawyered event, Rashmi Verma spoke with Mr. Himanshu Gupta, Founder of Lawyered-LOTS, and discussed the company’s journey, business model, expansion plans, challenges, and long-term vision for transforming India’s legal ecosystem.
Instant Legal started by addressing roadside legal assistance through a mobile-first solution, creating an entirely new category. With a strong legal infrastructure now in place, how are you planning to scale this model and expand into other areas of law?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): So our roadside legal assistance was a completely new category we created. There is a huge scope for expansion in this. What we looked at is that this particular playbook can be easily replicated in other sectors also. For example, in inheritance law and wills, where will drafting is one aspect and will registration is another aspect. We have created a huge legal infrastructure in the country with about 75,000 lawyers. Using the same infrastructure, we are getting into other areas of law also, providing similar solutions.
Instant Legal created a new category with roadside legal assistance. How do you plan to scale this model and expand into other areas of law?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): We have a very simplistic solution, whereby the first line of defense is our on‑call support. We have a national helpline number, whereby any customer can call 24/7 irrespective of location and instant legal help is provided on call. In case the matter cannot be resolved on the phone, the network of lawyers that we have created, about 75,000, covers almost every 50 kilometers. A lawyer reaches the spot within two hours if needed. If a lawyer is needed to file an FIR or a bail application, it is instantly done rather than waiting for three to ten days.
Then we also realized: how do we solve the problem of challans? So, challan specifically, LOTS ke sath sath challanpay.in/ software launch kar diya. Isme kisi bhi commoner ko, kisi bhi vehicle owner ko simple technology solution diya. Aap jayiye challanpay.in/ pe, apni gadi ka number daliye, check your pendency of challans, click of a button challan gets resolved in the court.
From the customer’s perspective, how is your lawyer network structured? Are these lawyers gig workers, or are they independent legal professionals formally onboarded on your platform?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): So these are not gig workers. These are all legal professionals who are working in tier‑2 and tier‑3 cities. We have them on our platform. Whenever a need arises, we have structured pricing with them. They come in immediately, they work as freelancers. They work here just like any advocate who works.
So is your model largely freelance-based, or do you also have lawyers on payroll and through affiliates in high-volume locations?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): We do have certain lawyers on our payroll as well as certain lawyers from our affiliates, wherever we have repeated volume of work. But largely, in 90% of the country, we have lawyers who are just one call away. They get activated and provide us the legal support on the spot.
So you are also creating big job opportunities.
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): Absolutely.
How did your journey with the right investors begin, and how did that eventually lead to your pitch and record-breaking all-shark deal on television?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): The journey with the idea started from Startup Maha in Delhi, where we were looking around and we found them. They liked our idea and then worked with us to be part of the show. In August, our pitch happened and the rest is history. We are really fortunate that we got an all‑shark deal, and the amount of funding that we have raised on television is actually record‑breaking in television history.
Can you share the current scale of Instant Legal in terms of users, case volumes, lawyer network, and revenue growth?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): In terms of volume, we have roughly around six and a half lakh vehicles already. We are resolving almost 15,000 to 20,000 challans per month. In terms of lawyers, about 75,000 lawyers. In terms of revenue, we are almost at 15 crore and we will be able to double that in the next six months.
What are the challenges that you faced during this journey?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): Of course. It is a new category that we have created. Legal tech to waise hi koi maanta nahi hai, wo ek alag challenge tha. And creating a category of roadside legal assistance, whereby people know that the problem exists but whether the solution will work or not, that was another challenge we faced. But again, we established trust with larger associations, like all the different associations in the country in the transportation and mobility sector. With their trust, we were able to penetrate deeper into the customer segment and then it kept on building from there.
What inspired you to start LOTS, and how did your personal background and experiences shape the idea of building a tech-driven, consumer-focused legal solutions platform?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): Well, for that you can watch the episode also. But I am not a lawyer; I am an engineer, management also, and I have spent about 18–19 years in corporate. Then, after getting frustrated with the corporate hustle, I thought of doing something on my own. That is how the journey with LOTS started. We were basically looking at the huge gap between consumers and lawyers. That is where our journey started, with an online marketplace, which eventually transformed into creating tech‑based, consumer‑focused legal solutions.
There is a common issue where truck drivers involved in accidents avoid seeking immediate legal help due to fear of lawyers, courts, and lengthy legal processes, often choosing to surrender instead. Was addressing this hesitation and preventing legal matters from escalating the core problem you set out to solve?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): See, what happens in India is that people are afraid of taking legal help in time. Aur jitna delay hota hai, utna matter bigadta hai. We are not pushing our customers to go and fight a legal battle. LOTS comes into play and absolutely solves the problem there and then, even before the matter escalates. The moment our truck driver gets legal help instantly, the matter escalates hi nahi hota. Instantly wahi pe settlement ya resolution ho jata hai, whereby the party that is on the right side, of course, does not need to go to court. Jab insan ke paas legal help nahi hoti, uski wajah se matter escalate hota hai and the endless agony happens. Now, with our support and our help, all these transporters freely tell everyone.
So, you are primarily focused on resolving issues at the spot rather than allowing them to escalate.
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): So LOTS is not just a legal marketplace. LOTS is a roadside legal assistance platform, proactively preventing the issue from escalating rather than the matter going into court. Court jana toh ultimate solution hota hi nahi hai, otherwise settlement or resolution happens on the spot.
Where do you see LOTS in the next 10 years?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): We would want LOTS to be a household name, whereby the way you search on the internet, you say “Google”. On the same lines, if there is anything legal in your mind, you say “LOTS”.
How large is the market opportunity for Instant Legal (LOTS), and how competitive is this space?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): If we look specifically at the legal mobility market, it is valued at around $8 billion. When you consider the overall legal market across different sectors, the size is approximately $55 billion, growing at a healthy 12–14% annually. While there are a few players operating in related legal segments, there is currently no competitor following the same model as LOTS. This gives us a strong early-mover advantage, allowing us to scale quickly and capture the market efficiently.
Before we wrap up, is there any message you would like to share with users, and could you also highlight any new solutions?
Himanshu Gupta (Founder): Mostly, I would like to tell users: please do not hesitate to take legal support in times of actual need. And the ChallanPay that is a D2C product we have launched—challanpay.in/—apko kuch nahi karna, website pe jayiye, challanpay.in/ pe apni gadi ka number daliye, challan check kijiye, click of a button challan gets resolved. Get your vehicles legally compliant.
