The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has revealed its entire roadmap in an ambitious attempt to support the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in India. The strategy is in line with the country’s Vision of Viksit Bharat. The plan, which was unveiled by Hanif Qureshi, IPS, Additional Secretary (Automobile Division), is expected to solidify India’s position as a worldwide leader in the shift to e-mobility.

In a letter dated April 18, 2024, Qureshi stated that inclusive growth and stakeholder cooperation form the cornerstone of the strategy. In collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and other essential organisations, the ministry has formed an EV task group. The goal of this task force is to plan seminars and gatherings that will generate ideas and suggestions essential to the nation’s infrastructure advancement and uptake of electric vehicles.

The published plan outlines a multifaceted strategy that addresses important EV domain topics including battery swapping, e-buses, charging infrastructure, and the utilisation of cutting-edge parts like rare earth magnets. Various agencies like GIZ/FICCI, RMI, IBSA, ICCT, WB, USAID, and IESA have been assigned to supervise the creation of particular EV framework parts.

Qureshi’s letter calls for engagement with these agencies to craft an action plan that will expedite EV adoption in India. The initiative is a testament to the country’s dedication to embracing clean energy and innovation, setting a precedent for a sustainable transportation future.
