India has reached a significant milestone in its electric mobility journey, with the country’s EV charging network surpassing 24,000 public charging stations, according to the latest government data.
Rapid Expansion of Charging Infrastructure
The Ministry of Power reported that this expansion marks a sharp rise from the 16,000 stations recorded in early 2024, reflecting strong policy support, increased private investments, and the growing adoption of electric vehicles nationwide.
The network spans highways, urban centres, and tier-2 cities, improving accessibility for EV owners and reducing “range anxiety”, a key concern among potential buyers.
Leading States in EV Charging Growth
States such as Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have emerged as frontrunners in EV charging infrastructure, owing to their progressive policies and active participation from private companies. Several metro cities now boast dense charging networks, encouraging wider adoption of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and cars.
Government Push and Industry Role
The government’s FAME-II scheme, coupled with incentives under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) program, has played a critical role in enabling this growth. At the same time, private players including Tata Power, Statiq, ChargeZone, and Indian Oil have been aggressively expanding their networks across highways and cities.
Why It Matters
-
Convenience for EV Users: More charging points help reduce waiting times and improve ease of long-distance travel.
-
Boost to EV Adoption: Strong infrastructure encourages new buyers to switch to electric mobility.
-
Clean Energy Transition: Expanding charging infrastructure supports India’s goal of achieving 30% EV penetration by 2030.
The Road Ahead
Industry experts believe India will need over 100,000 public charging stations by 2030 to meet the anticipated EV demand. With increasing collaboration between the government and the private sector, the pace of infrastructure rollout is expected to accelerate further in the coming years.
