Utilising reused EV batteries, the station integrates solar power generating with battery energy storage.

In Bengaluru’s Galamma Circle, close to Kempegowda International Airport, India has installed its first solar-powered EV charging station with integrated second-life battery storage. The program is a pilot project under the Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action, Accessibility (SUM-ACA) program’s Green Urban Mobility Innovation Living Lab, which is backed by GIZ India, BESCOM, and the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT).

Karnataka Energy Minister Shri K.J. George officially launched the Renewable Energy to Electric Vehicle (RE2EV) project. Utilising reused EV batteries, the station integrates solar power generating with battery energy storage. A 100 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) receives power from a 45 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic system, enabling charging at any time of day or night. During times of high demand and at night, the solar energy that has been stored can be utilised.

This strategy prolongs the life of lithium-ion batteries, promotes energy efficiency, and lessens the strain on the electrical grid. Additionally, it supports national objectives for electronic waste management and the circular economy.

Nine DC fast chargers, including four 30 kW and five 50 kW models, are included in the charging station and are provided by Delta Electronics India. More than 8,000 chargers have been delivered by Delta in India, and more than 3 million worldwide. Private, business, and fleet EVs are among the cars that the chargers are compatible with.

4,462 of the 5,880 EV charging points in Karnataka are found in the Bengaluru Urban district. In 2025, the state installed 140 new chargers. The new hub is situated to service a busy transit corridor close to the airport and has the capacity to charge up to 23 vehicles at once.

BESCOM’s “EV Mitra” app, which offers real-time information on charger availability and cost, allows users to access the station. Additionally, a QR code with WhatsApp payment integration can be used to start charging. There are five slow-charging stations and eighteen fast-charging stations at the station. Compared to private stations, tariffs are set lower.

The RE2EV initiative is intended to serve as a model that can be replicated in other urban and peri-urban areas. To increase sustainability and grid resilience, it incorporates high-capacity charging infrastructure, second-life battery use, and renewable energy.

By encouraging the use of vehicles as well as localised energy solutions, storage, and digital management systems, the program is a step towards creating a larger EV ecosystem in India.

Delta Electronics India Private Limited works in the automation, infrastructure, and power electronics industries. The company offers energy storage, UPS and data centre solutions, automation, renewable energy, telecom power, display systems, and EV charging systems. It maintains a network of more than 200 channel partners and runs four manufacturing plants and two research and development sites in India.
