The Government of India has classified the setting up of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) as an unlicensed activity, allowing private entities to install charging stations in line with the Ministry of Power guidelines issued on 17 September 2024. This move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen public charging infrastructure nationwide, including Tier-2 cities and rural areas, to support the growth of electric mobility.
Under the FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE schemes, the government has allocated ₹912.50 crore and ₹2,000 crore, respectively, for the deployment of adequate public EV charging infrastructure across India. According to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a total of 29,151 public EV charging stations have already been installed in the country.
Of the FAME-II allocation, ₹633.44 crore has been utilized for the development of public charging infrastructure. Meanwhile, under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) issued operational guidelines on 26 September 2025 for the deployment of EV Public Charging Stations (EVPCS). These guidelines provide a framework for project implementation and allow participation by both public and private entities.
The information was shared by Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on 10 February 2026.
This expansion highlights India’s commitment to building a robust EV ecosystem and promoting sustainable transportation across urban and rural areas.
