Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras has partnered with Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation to accelerate research and innovation in electric vehicle (EV) and advanced automotive technologies.
The collaboration will establish the Advanced Automotive Translational Research Centre (AATRC) at Tamil Nadu Knowledge City in Tiruvallur. The facility, planned across 40,000 sq. ft., will be developed with an investment of ₹200 crore over five years.
The centre will focus on key areas such as electric powertrains, automotive power electronics, battery technologies, EV charging systems, and software-defined vehicles. The goal is to drive industry-ready innovation and bridge the gap between research and real-world applications.
According to IIT Madras, the initiative is expected to deliver 40–50 innovative automotive products over the next five years. It will also support 150–200 startups and MSMEs by providing access to testing and validation infrastructure.
In addition, the project is projected to create 50–70 high-skill direct jobs and up to 2,100 indirect employment opportunities within the broader ecosystem.
The partnership aims to strengthen India’s position as a global hub for next-generation EV and automotive technologies. The Tamil Nadu government had signed an MoU with IIT Madras in January to set up the centre.
