To speed up production of its cutting-edge 2.5-wheeler smart electric vehicles, electric mobility startup iGo has formed a strategic manufacturing agreement with Pune-based veteran Sun Electro Devices.
By utilising India’s robust manufacturing base rather than producing every component in-house, iGo is eschewing the conventional giga-factory, vertically integrated EV manufacturing model and embracing an agile, ecosystem-driven strategy. This approach is different from previous developments in the industry, which were primarily influenced by cost pressures and government incentives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) programme.
“Why reinvent the wheel when we’ve already invented the twin-wheel?” joked Sravan Kumar Appana, CEO of iGo. “Our focus is to build a product customers love, and that’s only possible by combining deep tech innovation with decades of manufacturing excellence.”
Sun Electro Devices, operating from its expansive facility in Chakan, Pune, brings decades of automotive production expertise, a skilled workforce, and a robust supplier network. Their capabilities in delivering high-volume, high-precision components are expected to streamline iGo’s transition from prototype to large-scale production.
Appana noted that while hardware development is demanding, the biggest challenge for startups lies in certification and readiness for mass production. “This partnership solves that problem for us,” he said.
The alliance targets a ramp-up to 1,000 units per month within the next seven months, in preparation for iGo’s planned launch in Pune, Panjim, and Mumbai. The company’s twin-wheel EV platform offers advanced safety features, including anti-topple stabilisation technology, on-demand self-balancing, and a triple-disc CBS braking system—positioning it between conventional scooters and e-rickshaw carts.
Industry analysts view the move as more than just a manufacturing agreement, calling it a shift toward a collaboration-first EV production strategy that could influence global manufacturing approaches. iGo aims to not only redefine urban mobility in India but also set a precedent for future EV manufacturing worldwide.
