Hyundai’s new midsize electric SUV, Elexio, has been spotted overseas for the first time, appearing on a carrier truck in Australia. The sightings confirm Hyundai’s plans to launch the model in early 2026, expanding its footprint beyond China.

China-Designed SUV Heads to Overseas Markets

Originally developed by Beijing-Hyundai for the Chinese market, the Elexio represents Hyundai’s strategy to leverage successful domestic EV designs in select overseas markets. Australia is expected to be one of the first countries outside China to receive the SUV, with possible expansion to neighbouring regions like New Zealand.

      Platform, Battery, and Performance Specs

The Elexio is built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, shared with other high-tech EVs from Hyundai and Kia. Key specifications include:

      • Battery capacity: 88.1 kWh

      • Range: Up to 450 miles (CLTC)

      • Drive options: Single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD

      • Fast charging: 30% to 80% in approximately 27 minutes

These specs position the Elexio competitively in the midsize EV segment.

      High-Tech Interior and Connectivity

The Elexio features a technology-rich interior, including

      • Panoramic 27″ 4K widescreen display

      • Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processor

      • Huawei-powered ADAS driver assistance systems

This focus on advanced electronics and comfort highlights Hyundai’s commitment to premium EV experiences.

      Market Positioning and Competition

The Elexio is slightly smaller than the Tesla Model Y and similar in size to the BYD Atto 3, targeting the mid-range electric SUV segment. Pricing in Australia is expected to be slightly lower than the Hyundai IONIQ 5, making it an attractive option for buyers seeking advanced features at a competitive price.

      Global Expansion Strategy

While the Elexio may not become a fully global model, Hyundai aims to leverage its China-developed EVs in select international markets. This approach allows the company to optimise production while tapping into overseas demand for mid-range electric SUVs.

      Conclusion

Hyundai’s Elexio represents the brand’s strategic expansion into global electric mobility, offering a feature-rich, high-range midsize EV for international consumers. The upcoming 2026 launch in Australia will be a key milestone for Hyundai’s overseas EV ambitions.
