In a landmark collaboration poised to reshape the global automotive landscape, Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors (GM) have unveiled plans to jointly develop their first five vehicles. The partnership marks a major milestone in both companies’ strategic efforts to expand their market reach and accelerate innovation.
The co-developed lineup will target Central and South American markets with four versatile models — a compact SUV, a car, a mid-size pickup, and a smaller pickup truck — while an electric commercial van is set for the North American market. Production for all models is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the companies expecting to scale output to more than 800,000 units annually once the lineup is fully launched.
Division of Responsibilities and Brand Identity
Under the agreement, GM will lead development of the midsize truck platform, while Hyundai will focus on the compact vehicle and electric van. Both automakers will share common platforms but customise interior and exterior designs to reflect each brand’s identity, ensuring distinct appeal for customers.
José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, highlighted the benefits for consumers:
“Our collaboration will allow us to offer beautifully designed, high-quality vehicles that meet the safety and technological needs of customers across various segments. Together, GM and Hyundai’s combined scale will help deliver the best of both worlds faster and more efficiently.”
Sustainability and Efficiency Goals
The partnership will extend beyond vehicle development, with joint sourcing initiatives in the Americas to streamline procurement of raw materials, logistics, and components. GM and Hyundai will also explore the use of low-carbon steel as part of their shared commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
Shilpan Amin, GM’s Senior Vice President and Global Chief Procurement and Supply Chain Officer, stressed the efficiency of the collaboration:
“By working together, GM and Hyundai are poised to offer a wider range of vehicles more quickly and at a lower cost, demonstrating how our complementary strengths can create a compelling offer for customers.”
Future Technologies and Market Leadership
In addition to internal combustion and hybrid powertrains, the automakers plan to explore hybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell propulsion technologies, aligning with global trends toward cleaner, more efficient mobility.
With this co-development initiative, Hyundai and GM aim to strengthen their positions in key markets while driving forward the next era of automotive innovation — one that prioritises efficiency, sustainability, and consumer choice.
