Hyderabad will have a fully electric public transport system by December 9, with all TGSRTC buses operating within the city set to be converted to electric vehicles, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced.
Currently, around 2,800 diesel buses operate in the city, and 500 electric buses have already been introduced. The government plans to phase out diesel buses beyond the Outer Ring Road before completing the transition to a fully electric fleet within the city.
As part of the broader anti-pollution strategy, Telangana has also introduced a zero-tax policy for electric vehicles and is preparing to convert nearly 200,000 petrol and diesel auto-rickshaws to electric under a retrofitting initiative. Additional measures include a ban on single-use plastics and relocating polluting industries outside city limits.
Speaking at an event on International Women’s Day, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of preventing urban challenges experienced in other major cities, such as flooding in Chennai, traffic congestion in Bengaluru, and air pollution in Delhi.
Highlighting Telangana’s economic goals, CM Revanth Reddy said the State aims to become a $1 trillion economy by 2034 and a $3 trillion economy by 2047, contributing 10% to India’s GDP by that year. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, including workplace safety and recognition for women journalists.
