Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Gujarat jumped 75.5% year-on-year in March 2026, driven by fuel concerns amid the West Asia crisis and a rush to claim expiring tax benefits.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Gujarat recorded 12,729 EV registrations in March, up from 7,252 in March 2025. Pure EV sales more than doubled to 11,126 units, compared to 5,271 a year earlier—a 111% increase.
The surge is attributed to improved affordability, policy support, and shifting consumer preferences, with demand rising across both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Month-on-month sales nearly doubled in March.
The state government has extended RTO-linked tax incentives for EVs until March 31, 2027, up from the earlier deadline of March 31, 2026. While direct subsidies were withdrawn in 2024, municipal tax rebates and central schemes continue to encourage adoption.
Electric two-wheelers remain the dominant segment, while electric passenger vehicles are gaining popularity among affluent buyers and fleet operators looking to hedge against rising fuel costs.
