Puducherry, India – GreenCell Mobility will operate 75 battery-electric buses for public transport in Puducherry as part of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ PM-eBus Sewa scheme. The project, valued at ₹5.32 billion (approximately €50 million), covers 12 years of operation and maintenance, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The new fleet will be based at the Mettupalayam Bus Depot and aims to improve last-mile connectivity across the city. The order includes 25 nine-metre buses and 50 twelve-metre buses, all supplied by Pune-based EKA Mobility.
The twelve-metre buses can accommodate 43–54 passengers, including accessible seating for passengers with reduced mobility. They feature a 240 kW motor, 300 kWh LFP battery, top speed of 80 kph, and a range of up to 250 km. The nine-metre buses seat 33–35 passengers, have a 213 kW motor, 200 kWh battery, and a range of 180 km. Both types are air-conditioned for Puducherry’s hot and humid climate, with seating layouts designed for accessibility.
GreenCell Mobility, which currently operates over 1,200 electric buses and 300 intercity coaches, will support the new fleet with its 270 nationwide charging stations.
Devndra Chawla, MD & CEO of GreenCell Mobility, said, “With Puducherry, we are reinforcing our commitment to develop sustainable public transport ecosystems across India’s emerging urban centres.”
