General Motors (GM) has announced a temporary slowdown in the production of its premium electric vehicles, the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ, at its dedicated Factory Zero plant in Detroit-Hamtramck. The move is aimed at aligning output with current market demand.
Production Pause and Workforce Impact
According to reports, the production adjustment will run from September 2 to October 6, 2025, during which both the first and second shifts at the plant will be paused. Approximately 160 of the 4,000 plant employees will be affected by the temporary suspension.
A GM spokesperson said,
“Factory Zero is making temporary adjustments to production to align to market dynamics.”
The GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ are among GM’s largest and most expensive electric models, and the slowdown follows a similar production cut at the same facility in April 2025, when 200 employees were laid off due to declining sales of larger EV models.
Strong Demand for Smaller EVs
While demand has cooled for GM’s larger EVs, smaller models such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV continue to see robust sales growth. In response, GM has refined its product strategy, emphasising a more diversified powertrain mix with a renewed focus on petrol-powered vehicles alongside its EV portfolio.
Investment and Future Production Plans
GM plans to invest $4 billion over the next two years to expand production across U.S. facilities in Michigan, Kansas, and Tennessee, targeting an annual output of over two million vehicles. Key upcoming initiatives include:
-
Orion Assembly, Michigan: Petrol SUVs and pickups production starting early 2027.
-
Fairfax Assembly, Kansas: Launch of petrol Chevrolet Equinox mid-2027, along with Chevrolet Bolt EV production by year-end.
-
Spring Hill Manufacturing, Tennessee: Petrol Chevy Blazer production from 2027, alongside Cadillac Lyriq, Vistiq, and XT5 models.
Additionally, GM will invest $888 million in its Tonawanda Propulsion Plant near Buffalo, New York, to manufacture next-generation V8 engines.
Continued EV Leadership
Despite the temporary slowdown, GM remains the second-largest EV seller in the U.S., trailing only Tesla, with 13 all-electric models currently available across its brands. Factory Zero will continue to produce the Hummer EV, Escalade IQ, Silverado EV, and Sierra EV, albeit with temporary adjustments to output.
