A high-level visit to Wahu Mobility, the nation’s first electric bike (e-bike) manufacturing company, was arranged by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and the United Nations in Ghana in partnership with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre as part of a historic push towards clean and inclusive transportation. The occasion highlights Ghana’s increasing dedication to low-carbon mobility in keeping with its aggressive net-zero goals.
The event, which took place at the Wahu Mobility facility, brought together journalists, development partners, commercial sector stakeholders, senior government officials, and UN representatives. The tour demonstrated how domestic e-bike solutions are lowering carbon emissions, relieving traffic in cities, and generating jobs in the area.
Clean Transport, Clean Future
The growth of e-mobility, particularly electric two-wheelers, is being acknowledged as a major force behind sustainable development as Ghana moves on with its Energy Transition and Investment Plan. Currently, Wahu Mobility is growing its business to provide e-bikes for commuting and delivery services throughout Ghana and West Africa.
According to Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO of Sustainable Energy for All and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, this initiative exemplifies the usefulness of Ghana’s Energy Transition and Investment Plan, the nation’s top-notch roadmap for achieving its net-zero goals. 40% of the required emissions reduction may be achieved by electrifying transport alone, and Ghana is transforming how people live, travel, and work in a more environmentally friendly economy.
Sustainable Goals in Action
In particular, SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) are all directly in line with the program.
“We applaud Ghana’s leadership in advancing climate-smart, inclusive development,” stated UN Resident Coordinator a.i. in Ghana Osama Makkawi Khogali. “Electric mobility improves lives and livelihoods while simultaneously addressing environmental concerns.”
Innovation on Wheels
Attendees interacted with engineers and consumers who offered first-hand stories of lower commuting expenses and more daily productivity, and they watched live demonstrations of the locally produced e-bikes.
Ghana is a desirable place for climate-smart investments, especially in solar PV, battery storage, and electric mobility technologies, due to its strategic location and policy orientation.
A net-zero economy by 2060 is the goal of the Ghana Energy Transition and Investment Plan, which was created in collaboration with SEforALL. It seeks to promote the growth of a low-carbon industrial environment and encourage innovation in green sectors.
Initiatives like Wahu Mobility show a possible paradigm for sustainable growth, not only for Ghana but also for the region and beyond, as the country continues on its path towards decarbonisation.
