Electric and hybrid vehicles continued to drive growth in Europe’s auto market, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rising 41.7% and hybrid electric vehicles increasing 15.3%, while petrol vehicle registrations declined by 10.2%.
Hybrids held the largest share of new vehicle registrations in the first quarter at 38.6%, followed by petrol vehicles at 22.6%. BEVs accounted for 19.4% of the market.
Tesla reported a strong rebound in March, with registrations surging 84.3% year-on-year to 52,600 units. Meanwhile, BYD recorded even faster growth, with registrations jumping 147.6% to 37,580 vehicles.
The data highlights a continued shift among European consumers toward electric and hybrid vehicles, supported by regulatory efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Both Tesla and BYD have benefited from this transition, with BYD gaining traction through its competitively priced hybrid models. The company has recently accelerated its expansion in Europe following the European Union’s decision to ease import tariffs on certain Chinese automakers.
