Electric vehicle (EV) registrations in Maharashtra have rebounded in FY2025-26, growing by about 13% after a sharp decline in the previous fiscal, according to the latest state economic survey. The recovery indicates renewed momentum in EV adoption after a slowdown caused by infrastructure and consumer concerns.
The report noted that EV registrations had fallen by around 19% in FY2024-25, largely due to issues such as range anxiety among buyers and limited availability of charging infrastructure across the state. However, the market began to recover in FY2026 as charging networks expanded and more EV models entered the market.
Maharashtra continues to see strong overall vehicle growth. The total number of motor vehicles in the state reached about 5.3 crore as of January 1, 2026, up from 4.9 crore a year earlier, representing an increase of roughly 8.2%. Two-wheelers remain the dominant segment, rising from 3.5 crore to 3.8 crore units during the same period.
Industry experts attribute the improvement in EV registrations to several factors. The state has been expanding public charging infrastructure, including new stations along highways and in urban areas. Power utilities have also introduced discounted electricity tariffs for EV charging connections in housing societies, making home and community charging more affordable.
Another key driver has been the growing number of EV options available to consumers. Automakers have launched several new electric models across segments, including hatchbacks, SUVs and two-wheelers, offering buyers greater choice. Electric two-wheelers continue to account for a large share of EV adoption due to their relatively lower cost and suitability for urban commuting.
As of December 2025, the state had over 9.27 lakh battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on its roads. The Maharashtra EV policy aims to further accelerate adoption by supporting charging infrastructure expansion, electrification of public transport, and development of EV manufacturing and research ecosystems in the state.
The rebound suggests that despite earlier setbacks, Maharashtra remains one of India’s key markets for electric mobility and is expected to play an important role in the country’s transition toward cleaner transportation.
