Diodes Incorporated (Nasdaq: DIOD) presents the AP74502Q and AP74502HQ automotive-compliant* 80V ideal diode controllers, which offer strong and dependable defence against voltage transients and reverse connections. Advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), body control modules, infotainment systems, exterior lighting, and USB charging connections are examples of common applications.

The best diode controllers contain every feature required to put in place a quick and effective circuit for reverse polarity protection. In the event of overvoltage or undervoltage, they also have a load disconnect feature. They work with all 12V and 24V batteries and have an 80V capability. This covers batteries found in battery electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid cars, as well as the new 48V systems.

By making features like electric turbocharging and enhanced regenerative braking possible, the switch to 48V is opening the door for EV breakthroughs. Advanced infotainment systems and electrified auxiliary components are also made possible by the higher voltage. Additionally, it might result in a zonal architecture, which would require less wiring and enable more effective power distribution. Because these 48V systems are subject to stricter overvoltage stress conditions, the ±80V rating is very important.

These devices are appropriate for applications where energy may return to the input supply, in contrast to ideal diodes with reverse current blocking features. To safeguard downstream loads and overvoltage supplies from unsuppressed load dump transients, they can also be set up as surge stoppers.

In addition to supporting input voltages as low as 3.2V, the AP74502Q and AP74502HQ controllers guarantee accurate and dependable performance even in extreme cold crank settings, which can result in a sharp decline in battery voltage. When necessary, such as during overvoltage or undervoltage occurrences, the two devices’ shared peak gate turn-off sink current of 2.3A allows for the quick turn-off of the external N-channel MOSFETs.

The operating quiescent current (IQ) is 62 µA when the charge pump is activated and 1 µA when it is disabled. This minimises the system’s overall power consumption and drastically cuts down on battery depletion.

With its peak gate source current, usually 60μA, the AP74502Q offers a smooth startup with built-in inrush current regulation. In applications where minimising the initial current surge is crucial, this is beneficial. On the other hand, like other models in Diodes’ ideal diode controller portfolio, the AP74502HQ has a greater peak gate source current of 11 mA. The external MOSFET may be turned on more quickly—typically within 1 µs—thanks to this greater gate drive.

The industry-standard SOT28 package contains the AP74502Q and AP74502HQ, which have an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. Both devices can be purchased in 1,000-piece quantities for $0.27 each.
