Several public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Delhi are poorly maintained and remain underutilized, with many found to be non-operational due to infrastructure issues and lack of upkeep. An on-ground visit to multiple locations across the city revealed inconsistent usage patterns and widespread maintenance concerns.
In Connaught Place, at least three EV charging points located between Blocks D and F were found to be non-functional. While the charging infrastructure is still in place, several components appear to be missing, rendering the stations unusable. One charging point between Blocks E and F was found sealed, indicating prolonged inactivity.
A charging station near the Press Club of India on Raisina Road was also found to be out of service. The unit showed visible signs of neglect, including accumulated dust, cobwebs, and litter in the surrounding area. Display data indicated that the last recorded charging session took place in January 2024, suggesting extended disuse.
In contrast, charging infrastructure near the Sarai Kale Khan Metro Station in southeast Delhi appeared to be in higher demand. The station reportedly experiences steady usage, particularly during evening hours, when increased EV traffic often leads to queues and occasional congestion in the area.
At the Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital, a public charging point was found installed but rarely used. Despite being in place for several years, the station has seen little to no activity, pointing to possible issues related to location planning or user awareness.
Similarly, a charging station on Najafgarh Road in Moti Nagar, operated by a private dealership, showed low utilization levels. Although the facility remains operational and accessible around the clock, overall usage remains limited, with relatively higher activity observed during night hours.
The findings highlight uneven demand, poor maintenance, and planning challenges facing Delhi’s public EV charging network, raising concerns about infrastructure efficiency at a time when the city is pushing for increased adoption of electric mobility.
