The Delhi government has initiated a high-level review of its revised Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, with a strong focus on charging infrastructure expansion, last-mile mobility solutions, and battery recycling frameworks. The discussions were led by the Chief Minister in consultation with senior cabinet ministers as the capital prepares to roll out Delhi EV Policy 2.0.
Focus on Expanding EV Charging Infrastructure
A key priority under the revised EV policy is the large-scale expansion of charging infrastructure across the National Capital. The government aims to significantly increase the number of public and residential charging stations, ensuring easy access for private EV users, fleet operators, and commercial vehicles. Officials highlighted that improving charging availability is essential to overcome adoption barriers and support Delhi’s rapidly growing EV population.
Strengthening Last-Mile Electric Mobility
The policy review also emphasized the need to organise and strengthen last-mile electric mobility, particularly e-rickshaws and electric three-wheelers. Proposed measures include better route planning, improved integration with metro and bus networks, and regulatory reforms to enhance efficiency and commuter convenience. The objective is to ensure seamless, affordable, and sustainable urban mobility across the city.
Battery Recycling and End-of-Life Management
For the first time, the updated EV policy includes a structured framework for battery recycling and safe disposal. With EV adoption rising steadily, the government is addressing concerns related to end-of-life battery management, environmental safety, and resource recovery. The proposed guidelines aim to promote authorised recycling facilities and responsible handling of used EV batteries.
Policy Finalisation and Public Consultation
Officials stated that the draft EV policy has undergone multiple revisions and will soon be placed before the Group of Ministers (GoM) for final review. Following this, the policy is expected to be released for public and stakeholder consultation, allowing industry players, experts, and citizens to provide feedback before formal implementation.
Driving Delhi’s Clean Mobility Vision
The updated EV policy is a critical component of Delhi’s broader strategy to reduce vehicular emissions, improve air quality, and promote clean transportation. By prioritising charging infrastructure, battery sustainability, and efficient last-mile transport, the government aims to position Delhi as a leading EV-ready city and a model for urban electric mobility in India.
