If the proposed EV Policy 2.0 is approved, Delhi can soon say goodbye to gasoline, diesel, and CNG motorbikes. From August 15, 2026, the strategy recommends banning two-wheelers that are powered by fossil fuels.
The draft EV Policy 2.0 also plans to phase out fossil fuel-based vehicles and CNG-run autorickshaws used by civic agencies for solid garbage collection as part of a larger plan to cut Delhi’s air pollution.
It is expected that the new policy will be released shortly after approval by the Delhi cabinet.
he EV Policy 2.0 suggestions recommended that from August 15, 2025, Delhi will not register any new CNG autorickshaws. CNG vehicle permits will also not be renewed after that date. Permits will only be issued for electric vehicles instead. CNG vehicles more than ten years old will have to be replaced or converted into battery-operated vehicles.
Also, from August 15, 2026, the draft regulation proposes banning two-wheelers running on gasoline and CNG outright. Also, it proposes that from August 15, 2025, three-wheeler fossil fuel-run goods transporters not be registered.
Government vehicles and city buses used for collecting solid waste are also under scrutiny. In an effort to have all waste vehicles electric by December 31, 2027, the new policy recommends that the Delhi Jal Board, New Delhi Municipal Council, and Municipal Corporation of Delhi discontinue the use of fossil fuel-run vehicles.
The report recommends that private car owners who currently own two vehicles should purchase electric vehicles in the future only. Once the new EV policy is officially declared, this rule will come into force.
The country’s capital has been struggling with an extensive air pollution issue for decades, which worsens during winter when the Air Quality Index (AQI) becomes alarmingly high.
“The new policy will strive to cut air pollution in Delhi aggressively by replacing a huge fleet of fossil fuel-run vehicles with electric vehicles in light of this air pollution emergency,” authorities stated.
