The Government of Delhi has unveiled a new Electric Vehicle (EV) policy aimed at promoting electric mobility and reducing air pollution in the city. Under the scheme, residents who scrap their old petrol or diesel vehicles and purchase a new electric vehicle can receive incentives of up to ₹1 lakh directly in their bank accounts.
The policy requires residents to take their old vehicles to registered scrapping centers, and the new EV must be purchased within six months of scrapping. The initiative also covers other vehicle categories, offering ₹10,000 for scrapped motorcycles and scooters and ₹25,000 for three-wheelers.
The incentives will initially apply to the first 1 lakh vehicles, aiming to accelerate EV adoption while gradually reducing fossil-fuel-powered vehicles on Delhi roads. The move comes as the city faces high pollution levels, with over 61 lakh vehicles—including 41 lakh two-wheelers past their operational lifespan.
Experts predict that the new policy could boost EV adoption by up to 20 percent in Delhi. The government sees the initiative as a key step toward a cleaner, greener future, complementing ongoing measures like the deployment of 500 new electric buses to expand the city’s e-fleet.
