Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), the state-owned public transport operator of the national capital, has flagged off a new batch of 500 electric buses. With this latest addition, DTC has inducted nearly 2,000 electric buses over the past 12 months, BJP National President Nitin Nabin said at the flag-off ceremony.
The newly deployed fleet includes a mix of nine-metre and twelve-metre electric buses, most of which will operate on intra-city routes. A portion of the nine-metre buses will be deployed under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVi) initiative, aimed at providing residents with eco-friendly last-mile connectivity to DTC corridors and metro stations.
Delhi Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh also announced the introduction of electric bus services on a new interstate route connecting Delhi to Panipat in Haryana, located about 87 kilometres north of the capital. Three electric buses from the new batch have been assigned to this route, with DTC charging a fare of ₹129 for the service.
The 500-bus fleet includes electric buses supplied by JBM, Switch Mobility, and PMI Electro Mobility. JBM has delivered its Ecolife e9 nine-metre buses, which can accommodate up to 42 passengers and offer a driving range of up to 300 kilometres. Switch Mobility has supplied the low-floor variant of its 12-metre EiV12 bus, capable of carrying up to 63 passengers—39 seated and 24 standing—with a range of up to 200 kilometres. PMI Electro Mobility has also contributed 12-metre electric buses, although their specifications have not been disclosed.
With this deployment, Delhi now operates the largest electric bus fleet among Indian states and union territories, totaling 4,286 units. Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the Delhi government plans to expand the electric bus fleet to 7,500 units by the end of 2026 and further to 14,000 units by 2028. She also announced plans to introduce a new policy to promote electric rickshaws, reinforcing the government’s push towards cleaner and more sustainable public transport.
