The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, one of India’s most ambitious highway infrastructure projects, is set to significantly transform intercity travel between Delhi NCR and Uttarakhand. Spanning approximately 210 km and developed at a cost of nearly ₹12,000 crore, the six-lane access-controlled corridor is expected to reduce travel time from around 6.5 hours to nearly 2–2.5 hours once fully operational, marking a major leap in connectivity, safety, and travel predictability.
The expressway is already beginning to influence passenger behaviour on the corridor, with organised transport operators witnessing stronger demand even ahead of full commissioning. Improved road quality, smoother traffic flow, and reliable travel timelines are encouraging more travellers to opt for structured intercity transport over fragmented or private travel options.
Rohan Dewan, Founder and CEO of LeafyBus, noted that the expressway fundamentally changes how intercity bus travel is planned and delivered on the Delhi–Dehradun route. Traditionally, a large share of passengers travelled with multiple intermediate stops such as Rishikesh, Haridwar, and nearby towns, increasing journey time and operational complexity. Faster and more predictable roads now make direct point-to-point services to Dehradun far more viable, while allowing operators to continue separate, clearly defined services with planned halts for intermediate destinations.
According to Dewan, this segregation of routes improves passenger experience by setting clear expectations upfront. Travellers choosing direct services benefit from shorter, more efficient journeys, while those heading to intermediate locations continue to be served through dedicated routes designed around their specific travel needs.
From an operational perspective, Dewan highlighted that access-controlled expressways introduce greater discipline into intercity transport. While toll costs on expressways are higher, smoother traffic conditions reduce energy wastage caused by congestion, lower vehicle wear and tear, minimise idle time, and improve schedule reliability. Over time, these efficiencies help balance operating costs and significantly improve fleet utilisation.
LeafyBus is already seeing higher occupancy levels on the Delhi–Dehradun corridor and is actively working on fleet expansion to cater to rising demand. Dewan shared that passenger comfort remains central to the company’s service design, with electric buses offering quieter cabins, minimal vibration, and smoother rides compared to conventional diesel buses. On long expressway stretches, this results in a noticeably more relaxed and fatigue-free travel experience, particularly for passengers opting for direct services.
Dewan also pointed out that the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway strengthens the broader electric mobility ecosystem. Government-led investments in high-quality highway infrastructure, combined with the gradual expansion of charging infrastructure along major corridors, are creating the conditions required for scalable intercity EV adoption. Predictable routes enable better charging planning, turnaround management, and service reliability for electric bus operators.
Founded in 2023 and headquartered in New Delhi, LeafyBus has recently raised USD 4.1 million from Enetra India Pvt. Ltd., backed by Singapore-based Impact Capital Asia Management (ICAM), to scale its electric bus fleet from around 10 vehicles to over 100 across major intercity routes over the next two years. The company continues to invest in charging infrastructure and service quality to support long-distance EV operations.
Overall, Dewan emphasised that the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway reflects the government’s long-term vision to modernise India’s transport network while enabling cleaner, safer, and more organised mobility. As passenger demand continues to grow, organised EV bus operators are well positioned to increase capacity, improve frequency, and deliver reliable, comfortable intercity travel at scale.
