Dane County to Issue Final RFP for EV Chargers Near Multi-Family Housing

DANE COUNTY, WI: The Dane County Office of Energy and Climate Change has announced that grant funding remains available to support the planning and eventual construction of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations near multi-family housing developments across the county. A third and final Request for Proposals (RFP) is scheduled for release in March.

The funding is part of Charge Up Dane County, a federally supported initiative aimed at expanding access to affordable EV charging throughout the county. The program focuses on ensuring that residents who live in apartments and other multi-family buildings have access to convenient charging options.

While more than 80 percent of EV charging currently takes place at home—primarily in private garages—renters, particularly those in older apartment buildings, often face limited access to charging infrastructure. The grant program seeks to address that gap.

Under the initiative, Dane County works with selected property owners and site hosts to identify suitable locations, develop charging plans, and move toward construction of EV charging stations. More than 50 sites across the county are already participating, including schools, municipal parking lots, nonprofit facilities, faith-based organizations, businesses, and multi-family residential properties.

An interactive county map highlights current and proposed charging locations. Cross-hatched areas mark priority zones for additional infrastructure, including multi-family developments near the Sauk Point shopping center and along University Avenue. Green-shaded areas indicate neighborhoods with multi-family housing that are eligible for participation in the program.

County officials are encouraging property owners, businesses, and community organizations located within eligible areas to review program details and consider applying when the final RFP is issued.
