China’s EV Push Expands Globally as Domestic Market Slows

China is expanding its automotive and electric vehicle technologies into international markets amid slowing domestic demand and ongoing industry pressure.

China’s automotive sector has been affected by a prolonged price war, leading to market saturation and excess vehicle supply, including electric models from numerous manufacturers.

      Domestic Market Decline

In the first quarter, car sales in China fell by 18% year-on-year and are expected to remain flat or decline further in the near term. This slowdown is driving automakers to seek growth opportunities in overseas markets.

Despite tariffs in Europe, Chinese EVs remain competitive in terms of pricing. The United States market remains closed to Chinese vehicle imports.

      Export Growth

China exported 5.8 million vehicles last year, up nearly 20% from the previous year. Total vehicle exports, including commercial vehicles, are projected to reach 7.4 million this year.

      Industry Expansion Plans

Chinese automakers are increasing their focus on international markets, particularly in Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

China’s annual auto show in Beijing is expected to emphasize global expansion strategies across the industry.

EV maker Xpeng plans to begin mass production of flying cars next year and humanoid robots in 2026. The company has received over 7,000 orders for flying cars, mainly in China, and is working on regulatory approvals.

Xpeng also plans to begin robotaxi testing in Guangzhou this year, with wider international trials expected in 2027. Overseas markets accounted for around 15% of its revenue last year, with long-term plans to increase this share to over 50%.
