The Chinese automaker Chery appears to be preparing for its entry into the Indian market, and one of the latest developments is the testing of the Chery Jaecoo J5 on Indian roads. The model has been spotted in camouflage, suggesting that the company is actively evaluating it for a potential launch in the country.
Possible EV Debut in India
The Jaecoo J5 is available globally with both internal combustion and electric powertrain options. However, with JSW Group expected to partner with Chery for its India operations and focus on new-energy vehicles, the electric version is likely to be prioritised for the local market. The test vehicle shows a charging port located on the front quarter panel, which indicates that the model being evaluated is the EV variant.
Size and Design
Measuring around 4.4 metres in length, the Jaecoo J5 sits in the mid-size SUV category. The design follows a rugged and upright style with a boxy stance. Exterior highlights include projector LED headlamps, a closed-off front grille typical of EVs, functional air vents, and 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, although the wheels on the test car were partially concealed.
Interior Features
Inside the cabin, the SUV is expected to offer a feature-rich setup. Notable elements include a large 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, and a 50W wireless charging pad. The driver’s seat gets six-way electric adjustment, while the front passenger seat offers four-way power adjustment. Other features include an eight-speaker sound system and 64-colour ambient lighting to enhance the cabin experience.
Performance and Battery
Internationally, the electric Jaecoo J5 uses a front-wheel-drive motor producing around 207 bhp and 288 Nm of torque. The motor is paired with a 61 kWh battery pack that delivers a claimed driving range of up to 461 km under the NEDC testing cycle. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 7.3 seconds and supports DC fast charging of up to 130 kW.
Expected Price
In some overseas markets, the top variant is priced at approximately IDR 299,900,000, which converts to roughly ₹16.3 lakh. If launched in India, the model could potentially be positioned below ₹20 lakh, though specifications and pricing may change depending on local market requirements.
The Jaecoo J5 joins other Chery-linked models such as the Jetour T2 and the iCAR V23 that have also been associated with the brand’s possible India entry. Together, these developments suggest that Chery’s return to the Indian automotive space could involve a strong focus on electric and new-energy vehicles.
