The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to set up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across several key neighbourhoods to strengthen the city’s charging infrastructure and encourage the adoption of electric mobility.
According to civic officials, the proposed charging stations will be installed in prominent areas such as Anna Nagar, T. Nagar, Nungambakkam, Adyar and Besant Nagar. Each site will feature two charging points, enabling EV users to charge their vehicles while making use of nearby parking facilities.
The initiative aims to support the rising number of EV users in the city, including private owners as well as drivers working in app-based taxi services, logistics operations and delivery networks. With electric two-wheelers and cars becoming increasingly common across Chennai, accessible charging facilities in busy residential and commercial areas are expected to improve convenience for motorists who spend long hours on the road.
Civic authorities noted that the plan reflects the growing demand for public charging infrastructure as more residents shift to electric vehicles. Limited access to charging points has been a key challenge for many EV users, particularly in densely populated neighbourhoods and commercial hubs.
The proposal was earlier raised during a council meeting by Ward 104 councillor T. V. Shemmozhi, who highlighted the need for additional public charging facilities in residential areas. Responding to the request, Chennai Mayor R. Priya announced that the corporation intends to establish EV charging stations at more than 15 locations across the city as part of a wider push toward sustainable urban transport.
Officials added that the charging stations will be developed alongside parking spaces under the revamped Smart Parking Management System, which is being implemented through a public-private partnership model. Integrating EV charging with designated parking areas is expected to improve accessibility while optimising urban space.
The civic body is expected to begin work on the project by the end of the year, marking another step in Chennai’s efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
