Chennai’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has strengthened its green public transport network with the addition of 100 new low-floor electric buses at a cost of ₹170 crore. The new fleet was inaugurated on Monday by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin at the Thandayarpet MTC depot.
Among the 100 buses, 25 are air-conditioned, offering improved comfort for passengers. All buses are low-floor models, designed for better accessibility and convenience.
During the event, the Deputy CM also inaugurated the upgraded Thandayarpet electric bus depot, developed at a cost of ₹33.82 crore. In addition, foundation stones were laid for further electric depot expansion projects worth ₹289 crore. These projects include upgrading seven existing depots and establishing six new depots across the city, at locations such as Thaiyur, Taramani, Varadharajapuram, Ottandhangal, Tiruvallur, and Mamandur.
The expansion is part of Tamil Nadu’s ongoing efforts to accelerate EV adoption in public transport and support sustainable urban mobility in Chennai.
