The Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST) has been waiting for the Municipal Corporation’s approval for the past three months to install 15 additional EV charging stations in the city.
Chandigarh, which is working toward becoming a model sustainable city, has set a target to reduce its carbon footprint by 2030. With the number of electric vehicles increasing, the need for more charging infrastructure is also rising.
CREST had conducted a survey in coordination with the Municipal Corporation to identify suitable locations for new charging points. Six alternative sites and 15 new locations were shortlisted for installation.
Under its Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) plan, CREST has already set up charging stations at 36 locations across Chandigarh, along with 16 battery swapping stations. Out of these, 32 stations are equipped with fast chargers.
Earlier, the Municipal Corporation had approved 39 locations, but charging stations were installed at 36 sites. Three locations—identified under the Municipal Corporation and the Engineering Department—were found unsuitable, which led to the search for alternative sites.
The delay in approval for the remaining 15 charging units has slowed down the expansion of the city’s EV network, even as authorities continue to push for wider adoption of electric vehicles.
