Chinese battery giant CATL has unveiled a suite of next-generation electric vehicle (EV) battery technologies, highlighting ultra-long range and record-breaking charging speeds at its annual “Super Technology Day.”
The company’s announcements include an experimental EV battery capable of delivering up to 1,500 kilometres of driving range, alongside the third-generation Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery, which can charge from 10% to 90% in just 6 minutes and 27 seconds under optimal conditions.
CATL said the latest Shenxing battery incorporates improved thermal management systems to better control heat generation during rapid charging. In testing, the battery retained over 90% of its capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles, suggesting a balance between fast charging performance and long-term durability.
The company also highlighted strong cold-weather capabilities, stating that the battery can charge from 20% to 98% in just 9 minutes at temperatures as low as −30°C, addressing a key limitation of current EV technologies.
In parallel, CATL introduced upgrades to its Qilin Battery platform, which now reaches an energy density of 280 Wh/kg and supports driving ranges of up to 1,000 km. The battery also enables ultra-fast charging and delivers improved efficiency, reduced weight, and enhanced performance.
Another major development is the new Qilin Condensed Battery, featuring aviation-inspired materials and achieving 350 Wh/kg energy density and 760 Wh/L volumetric density, among the highest reported for mass-produced EV batteries.
Beyond lithium-based chemistries, CATL confirmed plans to begin large-scale production of its Naxtra sodium-ion batteries, positioning them as a lower-cost and temperature-resilient alternative for both EVs and energy storage systems.
The company is also advancing an integrated energy ecosystem combining ultra-fast charging, battery swapping, and self-heating technologies, aimed at improving charging convenience and reliability across different climates.
