A new global ranking of major automakers indicates that electric vehicle (EV) supply chains are becoming increasingly cleaner, driven largely by strong regulatory pressure from the European Union.
The fourth edition of the Lead the Charge Auto Supply Chain Leaderboard assesses global carmakers on efforts to build more sustainable, equitable, and fossil-free EV supply chains. It finds growing momentum among automakers to reduce emissions across materials such as steel, aluminium, and battery production—not just in vehicle tailpipe emissions.
EVs are already zero-emission at the tailpipe, but the next frontier is cutting emissions embedded in production and raw materials. Improvements are being seen as manufacturers shift toward low-carbon sourcing and cleaner manufacturing processes.
EU regulations have played a key role in pushing automakers toward greener supply chains. However, it also warns that some of these regulatory measures face potential rollback risks, which could slow progress in the sector.
Overall, the findings suggest that competition and regulation are accelerating efforts to make EV production more sustainable across the global automotive industry.
