General Motors has expanded the capabilities of its electric vehicle ecosystem with the introduction of GM Energy’s new smart bidirectional charging system, which now enables select Cadillac electric vehicles to directly power homes. This breakthrough in vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology strengthens GM’s clean-energy vision and positions Cadillac EVs among the most versatile electric vehicles on the market.
Under the new system, Cadillac models built on GM’s Ultium Platform—including the Cadillac Lyriq, Escalade IQ, and upcoming Cadillac EVs—can serve as backup home energy sources during outages, emergency situations, or high-demand grid conditions. Through the GM Energy PowerShift Charger and the V2H Enablement Kit, energy can flow seamlessly between the home and vehicle, allowing homeowners to access reliable power whenever needed.
The bidirectional system is engineered to automatically detect grid disruptions and switch to EV-powered home backup, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply for essential appliances, heating and cooling systems, and critical household operations. Depending on vehicle battery capacity and home energy usage, Cadillac EVs can provide several hours to multiple days of backup power, significantly improving household energy resilience.
GM Energy’s solution integrates with compatible home energy systems, offering smart load management, real-time monitoring, and the ability to optimize charging or discharging based on electricity rates. This intelligent coordination helps users reduce energy costs while supporting grid stability during peak demand periods.
The rollout is being supported through collaborations with leading utilities, including Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) in California. Pilot programs have demonstrated the potential of GM’s V2X ecosystem, with customers eligible for incentives up to $4,500 to adopt GM Energy technologies. This initiative highlights GM’s broader goal of making EVs part of a fully connected, sustainable energy network.
With the launch of this advanced V2H capability, Cadillac EVs deliver a dual advantage: premium electric performance combined with dependable home backup energy. GM expects the new system to drive faster consumer adoption of EVs while expanding the role of electric vehicles in modern home-energy landscapes.
