BYD is preparing to unleash one of the world’s most powerful electric cars — the Yangwang U9 Track Edition — boasting a staggering 3,000 horsepower.
The Chinese automaker first stunned the market with the original Yangwang U9, an all-electric supercar powered by four advanced motors delivering nearly 1,300 hp. Capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.36 seconds, the U9 also featured cutting-edge electric-air suspension technology, allowing it to spin on its axis and even jump over potholes.
Now, according to a new filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), BYD’s Track Edition will take performance to unprecedented levels. The upgrade includes four 555 kW motors — one at each wheel — for a combined output of 2,220 kW (3,019 hp), far surpassing the capabilities of most high-performance EVs.
The Track Edition will also feature enhancements aimed at optimising aerodynamics and handling, including a large fixed carbon-fibre rear wing, a rear diffuser with adjustable blades, and optional carbon-fibre front splitters. Standard equipment includes 20-inch wheels with 325/35 R20 tyres, a carbon-fibre roof, and advanced braking systems.
Performance figures have yet to be officially released, but the Track Edition is expected to set new benchmarks in acceleration and handling for electric supercars. Its debut will intensify the high-performance EV race, with many comparing it to the long-delayed Tesla Roadster II — a comparison that some enthusiasts believe will make Tesla’s upcoming model feel “like a steam engine with a side of quiche”.
The full unveiling of the BYD Yangwang U9 Track Edition is expected in the coming months, with the industry eager to see how this 3,000 hp electric powerhouse performs on the road — and the track.
