BYD Co., the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturer, is set to intensify its operations in India following a significant thaw in diplomatic relations between China and India. After five years of managing its Indian operations remotely, the company’s India Managing Director, Ketsu Zhang, along with other senior executives, is scheduled to visit India in the coming months to oversee operations firsthand.
During the visit, BYD’s leadership team will conduct comprehensive assessments of its manufacturing facility in southern India, including evaluating machinery, quality control processes, and operational efficiency. Additionally, they will restart employee training programmes that had been postponed due to travel restrictions, ensuring that local teams are fully aligned with BYD’s global manufacturing standards.
The visit coincides with BYD’s plans to launch the Atto 2 compact electric SUV in India early next year. Positioned as BYD’s most affordable EV offering in the Indian market, the Atto 2 is expected to directly compete with domestic players like Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Tata Motors Ltd., targeting both urban consumers and fleet operators looking for cost-effective EV solutions.
The resumption of business visas for Chinese nationals has been instrumental in enabling BYD’s renewed focus on India, allowing the company to engage directly with local stakeholders, government agencies, and suppliers. Industry observers note that this development marks BYD’s most significant push into India since its previous proposal to establish a manufacturing base was rejected in 2023, which had delayed its large-scale expansion plans.
With India emerging as one of the fastest-growing EV markets globally, BYD aims to leverage this opportunity to strengthen its brand presence, streamline local operations, and accelerate vehicle launches. Analysts suggest that BYD’s renewed physical presence could improve operational efficiency, enhance after-sales service, and bolster consumer confidence ahead of the Atto 2 launch.
This strategic visit underscores the impact of geopolitical developments on the EV industry, highlighting how improving bilateral relations can create opportunities for international automakers to expand in critical emerging markets like India. BYD’s leadership is expected to meet with industry partners, government officials, and local suppliers to finalise expansion strategies and secure long-term growth prospects in the country.
