Porsche and Ferrari will soon be joined by others. BYD recently announced that it will introduce its ultra-luxury EV brand, Yangwang, in Europe. It will be the first Chinese company to reach the most prestigious market in Europe.
BYD plans to launch another luxury brand in Europe after launching Denza earlier this year. Yangwang, with its cutting-edge performance and technology, is BYD’s most exclusive range of new energy vehicles.
The brand is currently getting ready to launch in Europe after being available for purchase in China for roughly two and a half years. Following Denza earlier in the year, BYD’s vice president Stella Li said that “our plan is that we will bring Yangwang into Europe.”
The Yangwang U8, BYD’s first ultra-luxury EV, went on sale in September 2023 after the company’s January 2023 launch.
With more than 1,100 horsepower (880 kW), the Yangwang U8 is an extended-range electric SUV (EREV) that resembles a Range Rover. It also comes loaded with features like float mode, which allows it to literally float on water, tank turns, and the U8 can even plough through more water than a Defender.
The second car, the Yangwang U9, was introduced by BYD a few months later in February 2024. Thanks to BYD’s DiSus-X body control system, the Yangwang U9 is an electric supercar with the ability to hop and dance.
With four electric motors producing about 1,300 horsepower, it can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in just 2.36 seconds, making it faster than a Ferrari.
In China, the starting prices for the Yangwang U8 and U9 are 1,098,000 RMB ($150,000) and 1,680,000 RMB ($230,000), respectively. In Europe, both will be sold.
According to Li, “More cars are coming,” one of which is the electric ultra-luxury sedan known as the Yangwang U7. The first U7 models, which start at 628,000 RMB ($87,000), were delivered by BYD to China last month.
The four-seater variant costs 708,000 RMB, or about $98,500, which is still about half the cost of the most affordable Ferrari.
BYD will be the first Chinese carmaker to enter Europe’s top luxury car market when Yangwang arrives.
Prices in Europe are anticipated to be significantly higher due to a further 17% tariff, export expenses, and other considerations. As the launch approaches, additional information will become available.
