The EV behemoth from China is doing well. BYD recently recorded its highest sales week in China in 2025, with about 68,000 registrations. Tesla, on the other hand, recorded slightly more than 3,000.
In 2025, BYD records its highest EV sales week.
Another week, yet another outstanding BYD performance. Even though sales for the week ending May 11 increased for most automakers, the firm is still by far the largest player in China’s EV market.
The most recent insurance registration data shows that between May 5 and May 11, BYD registered 67,980 automobiles. That is a 15% increase over the 58,310 registrations from the week before and BYD’s highest sales week in 2025.
Denza and Fang Cheng Bao, two of BYD’s premium sub-brands, saw 2,990 and 2,660 registrations, respectively, up 3.8% and 17.7% from the previous week.
Last week, XPeng and NIO reported better results in China, with 6,060 (+18.2%) and 6,870 (+23.8%) vehicle registrations, respectively. The new NIO sub-brands are beginning to acquire popularity. Firefly, which started delivery on April 29, contributed 470 more, while Onvo registered 1,660.
Other Chinese EV brands, such as Xiaomi, Deepal, and ZEEKR, also had impressive performances during the week of May 5–11. Xiaomi registered 5,180 of the SU7, its only electric vehicle. ZEEKR recorded 4,310 automobiles, whereas Deepal registered 4,700.
It is reported that just 3,070 Tesla automobiles were delivered in China last week, a 69% decrease from the same week the previous year.
To boost demand and stay up with companies like BYD, SAIC, and others, Tesla extended its 0% financing offer through June 30.
Opinion
Tesla’s sales dropped 9% to 28,731 in April, despite EV sales in China increasing 38%. However, last month, BYD sold over 380,000 new energy vehicles.
Plug-in hybrids are included in those figures, but even if you only consider EV sales, BYD is far ahead of Tesla and all other automakers in China. For the first time in more than a year, BYD sold more EVs than PHEVs last month, selling over 195,000 fully electric (EV) vehicles.
With more than 79,000 vehicles sold, BYD’s international sales also saw a rise for the fifth consecutive month. In April, it outsold Tesla in important markets like Germany (1,566 vs. 855) and the UK (2,511 vs. 512).
The carmaker has sold more than 285,000 cars in foreign countries as of April. Over the coming years, BYD’s momentum is anticipated to pick up speed as new production plans open in Europe, Mexico, Brazil, Southeast Asia, and other international locations.
Although BYD is mostly renowned for its affordable EVs, the company is quickly entering new markets with the introduction of premium automobiles, electric supercars, and pickup trucks.
