The innovative Aeroacoustics and Electric Drive Center (AEC) of the BMW Group has opened at the Research and Innovation Center (FIZ) in Munich. In addition to a cutting-edge workshop devoted to creating future electric mobility solutions, this state-of-the-art facility is home to the largest and quietest vertical acoustic wind tunnel in the world.

The AEC, which replaced BMW’s previous wind tunnel after over 40 years, marks a significant advancement in car development, especially for high-end electrified cars. According to Daniel Böttger, Head of Complete Vehicle Development at BMW AG, “Quiet is premium. This new facility will deliver the refinement our customers expect and drive unmatched advancements in aeroacoustics.”

Equipped with cutting-edge equipment, such as a laser vibrometry system and a 216-microphone acoustic camera, the wind tunnel allows for the accurate localization of vehicle noise sources to within one centimeter. Detailed assessments of wind and rolling noises are made easier by a full-scale acoustic all-wheel-drive roller dynamometer, whose semi-free-field design guarantees realistic simulations.

The development of electric mobility solutions, such as high-voltage batteries and inverters, is the subject of the second portion of the AEC. The complex, which spans 15,000 square meters, has assembly lines for future battery prototypes. Inverters, which are essential parts that transform battery power into the alternating current required for electric motors, are also manufactured in an 800 m² cleanroom.

In order to maximize site utilization, the AEC’s dual-building design uses an upright construction. Acoustic separation is ensured by a 3-meter-thick sound-insulated floor slab. The renovation was completed quickly and affordably without interfering with ongoing development operations thanks to lean construction practices and close coordination with the City of Munich.
