Vikram Pawah, the Managing Director and CEO of BMW Group India, says the company is not alarmed by the possibility of Tesla joining the Indian electric vehicle market and believes it will contribute to the growth of the market.
According to Vikram Pawah, the company, which sold 1,249 electric vehicles in India under the BMW and MINI brands, has already sold 646 units in the first quarter of 2025 and is sticking to its prediction that 15% of its overall sales in India will come from EVs.
Vikram Pawah responded, “We coexist in all the markets in the world,” in response to a question concerning competition from the American electric vehicle manufacturer. We all live together, and as you can see from the global statistics from the previous year, we were the ones who were expanding. Our global sales of electric vehicles increased.
He claimed that “not many manufacturers can talk about growth in electric vehicles.”
The BMW Group sold 4,26,594 fully electric cars in 2024, with a 13.5% increase in BEV sales. MINI and BMW both reported double-digit BEV growth, with 56,181 units (24.3%) and 3,68,523 units (11.6%) sold, respectively.
Tesla began hiring in February for a number of positions, including customer assistance specialist and business operations analyst.
Regarding the BMW Group’s chances for growth in India, Vikram Pawah stated that EVs currently make about 17% of overall sales.
Between January and March of 2025, the group’s automotive sales in India increased by 7% to 3,914 units.
