BMW India is ramping up its commitment to electric mobility in the country by expanding local EV production at its Chennai manufacturing facility. The company has officially started assembling the BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase (LWB), making India the first right-hand-drive market globally to receive a locally assembled iX1. This strategic move aims to reduce costs, improve accessibility, and boost BMW’s presence in India’s rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) segment.

      EV Production Expansion

BMW India plans to begin assembling the iX3 SUV at its Chennai plant by early 2027. Built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, the iX3 will offer advanced electric technology, luxury features, and enhanced performance, targeting the premium EV segment. With these initiatives, BMW is positioning India as a key EV hub in Asia, contributing to the company’s global green mobility goals.

      Sales and Market Performance

Between January and September 2025, BMW Group India sold 2,509 electric BMW and MINI models, marking a 246% year-on-year growth. The iX1 emerged as the top-selling model, followed by the flagship i7, while the company has now achieved over 5,000 cumulative EV deliveries since 2022. BMW India anticipates that EVs will account for 30% of total sales by 2030, up from 21% currently, driven by new model launches and rising consumer adoption of sustainable vehicles.

      Current EV Portfolio

BMW India’s growing electric lineup includes:

      • BMW i7 (luxury sedan)

      • BMW iX (electric SUV)

      • BMW i5 and i4 (sedans)

      • BMW iX1 LWB (premium crossover)

      • MINI Countryman E (electric hatchback)

      • BMW CE 04 and CE 02 (electric scooters)

      Strategic Advantages

By localizing EV production, BMW aims to:

      • Reduce import costs and enhance price competitiveness

      • Cater to the increasing Indian demand for luxury EVs

      • Contribute to the Indian government’s electric mobility and carbon reduction goals

      • Generate employment opportunities and advance EV technology adoption in India

      Future Outlook

BMW India’s proactive expansion of local EV manufacturing positions it as a premium EV leader in the country. With new models, advanced technology integration, and sustainable production practices, BMW is aligning with India’s green transportation vision while ensuring a strong foothold in the luxury EV market.
