The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has announced plans to establish 14 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Berhampur, widely known as Silk City, as part of its push to strengthen green mobility infrastructure and support the region’s transition toward clean transportation.
According to BeMC officials, the project aims to make EV charging more accessible to residents, reduce range anxiety among electric two-wheeler and four-wheeler owners, and encourage wider adoption of EVs in the city. The charging stations will be strategically located across high-traffic zones, public hubs, and key commuting corridors to ensure maximum convenience for users.
The initiative aligns with the municipal body’s broader sustainability goals, which include lowering carbon emissions, promoting eco-friendly transport, and supporting India’s national EV mission. As Berhampur continues to experience rapid urban development, BeMC is focused on creating future-ready infrastructure that can support the city’s growing population and mobility needs.
Officials noted that the charging stations will be designed to accommodate multiple vehicle types, ensuring compatibility with the growing number of electric scooters, bikes, auto-rickshaws, and cars entering the market. The establishment of these stations is expected to significantly improve EV infrastructure density in the region, making Berhampur one of the better-equipped tier-2 cities in eastern India.
The project is set to boost public confidence in electric mobility and create an enabling environment for residents to shift away from conventional fuel-based vehicles. With increasing demand for sustainable transport and the government’s emphasis on cleaner alternatives, BeMC’s move represents a timely and impactful step toward building a greener urban ecosystem.
