In a major step toward accelerating Canada’s electric mobility infrastructure, BC Hydro has announced plans to roll out ultra-fast 400 kW electric vehicle (EV) chargers across its network by the end of 2025. This strategic initiative aims to reduce EV charging times significantly and support the country’s growing fleet of electric cars, buses, and commercial vehicles.
The new 400 kW DC fast chargers are expected to deliver enough power to charge compatible EVs up to 80% in under 10 minutes, depending on the model and battery capacity. BC Hydro stated that the chargers will be strategically installed along key highways, urban centers, and major transportation routes to enhance long-distance EV travel and reduce range anxiety among drivers.
According to BC Hydro officials, this deployment aligns with the company’s broader sustainability commitment to help Canada achieve its net-zero emissions goals by 2050. The utility provider has been steadily expanding its EV charging network, and this latest upgrade represents a substantial leap in charging speed and convenience for users.
“By introducing high-power 400 kW chargers, BC Hydro is ensuring that EV drivers can travel farther and charge faster, making electric mobility a practical choice for everyone,” said a BC Hydro spokesperson. “We are committed to supporting Canada’s clean energy transition by offering the infrastructure needed for the next generation of electric vehicles.”
The announcement follows a wave of investments by both public and private players in the North American EV charging market. Automakers like Ford, GM, and Hyundai have already confirmed that their upcoming EVs will support high-power charging standards, further emphasizing the growing demand for such infrastructure.
BC Hydro’s project also includes upgrading existing fast-charging sites with additional connectors and better grid integration, ensuring reliability even during high-demand periods. The initiative will complement Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) strategy, which targets 100% of new light-duty vehicle sales to be electric by 2035.
With this move, BC Hydro joins other major utilities worldwide in embracing next-generation charging technology, putting Canada among the leaders in high-power EV charging adoption.
