Bajaj Auto is looking beyond Maharashtra to increase production of its Chetak electric scooter, as the company evaluates potential new manufacturing facilities in other states. Sources close to the matter say the automaker is considering sites including its Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand or a greenfield facility in southern India, with a final decision expected by June 2026.
Currently, most Chetak EVs are manufactured at the company’s Akurdi plant in Pune, while electric three-wheelers are produced at Waluj in Aurangabad. The expansion plan comes amid uncertainties regarding incentives under the Maharashtra government’s EV policy, which Bajaj Auto claims have not been fully paid.
The company has reportedly received only a portion of the promised incentives, with more than ₹60 crore still pending. Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj indicated that the remainder of the subsidy may not be disbursed, prompting the search for a location with a more predictable policy environment.
The move reflects Bajaj Auto’s effort to strengthen its position in India’s electric two-wheeler market, which is becoming increasingly competitive as EV adoption grows. Expanding production outside Maharashtra is seen as a strategic step to ensure consistent supply and meet rising demand for the Chetak EV.
